Step-by-Step Guide to Drying Lavender

1. Harvesting Your Lavender

Choose stems where the first buds are just opening for the best fragrance and color retention.

2. Preparing for Drying

Strip the leaves from the bottom of the stems, leaving the flowers and a few leaves at the top. Gather the stems into small bunches, securing them with a rubber band or string. Make sure not to bundle too tightly, as good air circulation is crucial.

3. Hanging the Lavender

Find a dark, dry, and well-ventilated place to hang your lavender. Closets, attics, or unused rooms are perfect. Hang the bundles upside down to maintain the straightness of the stems and prevent mildew.

4. Patience is Key

Allow the lavender to dry for about 2-4 weeks. You’ll know it’s ready when the buds feel dry and crumbly to the touch. At this stage, the lavender will have retained its fragrance and beautiful color.

5. Storing Dried Lavender

Once dried, remove the buds from the stems by gently rolling them between your fingers over a clean surface. Store the buds in an airtight container away from direct sunlight and heat to maintain their fragrance.
